What is it?

I teach traditional Scottish dance, specialising in step dance. Step dance is a form of percussive dance where you ‘beat with your feet’. It is an old form of Scottish dancing the emigrants from the Scottish Highlands and Islands took with them to places as far afield as Canada and Australia. The particular form I practice has been preserved and developed, along with the music and Gaelic culture, in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

What do I do?

I run one-off workshops and continuing classes for all ages, particularly in Aberdeen and North-East Scotland. I have taught at feisean throughout Scotland and currently teach in Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire. In the city I run weekly step dance classes for SC&T – Scottish Culture and Traditions and hold workshops throughout the area.

What do participants gain?

One of the great aspects of step dance is that participants of any age can dance specific steps to music straight away. Simple steps build into more complex patterns and formations, but participants learn at a speed that suits them best. Participants also learn about beat and rhythm in traditional Scottish music, and how to fit their steps to the music. At the same time, they enjoy an accessible, aerobic and fun workout.
